HC Deb 06 November 1946 vol 428 cc268-9W
96. Vice-Admiral Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will give an outline of the schemes of development in process in British Honduras, in view of the increased grant in aid of expenses of administration.

Mr. Creech Jones

The grant-in-aid is intended to meet not new development but ordinary expenses of administration for which the Colony's own revenue is insufficient. The amount issued during this financial year to date is £20,000 as compared with £42,000 for the whole of last year. It is still too early to say whether last year's issue will in fact be exceeded. I would add, however, that among the development schemes assisted from the Colonial Development and Welfare Vote are road construction from Belize to Cayo, extension of food production, construction of a bridge across the Belize River, rehabilitation of damaged schools and the appointment of a social welfare officer.
