HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 cc193-4W
Mr. K. Lindsay

asked the Minister of Education why she has given sanction to allowances of special responsibility where the sum involved exceeds £100 in some areas, but has withheld her sanction in Lancashire.

Miss Wilkinson

Under the terms of the Burnham Reports the payment of an allowance in excess of the normal maximum rates of £100 per annum and £80 per annum for men and women respectively may be proposed in any particular case where it is considered that the payment would otherwise be inadequate having regard to the duties and responsibilities involved. A number of proposals have been approved on this basis but I am unable to accept a general proposal such as that submitted by the Lancashire local education authority that all teachers holding posts of a specified kind should automatically receive higher allowances. The local education authority have been informed of the position and it is open to them to submit particular cases for special consideration in conformity with the terms of the Report.
