HC Deb 04 November 1946 vol 428 cc180-1W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Minister of Transport what steps he is taking to secure that the latest scientific discoveries are being used for life saving, lifeboats and signalling, with a view to minimising the postwar risks to which mariners are still exposed.

Mr. Barnes

My technical officers consider very carefully the merits of all precautionary and life-saving ideas and suggestions which are brought to their notice, whether through the technical press, or by companies or officers and men, or other individuals. A considerable advance was made during the war and a number of working parties, representing all sides of the industry, are now engaged in considering what alterations are desirable in the rules and specifications for life-saving appliances, lifeboats, signalling, including wireless, passenger ship construction, fire appliances, navigational aids and so forth.
