HC Deb 20 March 1946 vol 420 c366W
70. Mr. Dodds-Parker

asked the Minister of Food his plans for the coming fruit season for allowing the making of more jam, and whether extra sugar is to be provided for this purpose; and whether any special steps are being taken to encourage women's institutes to make jam with all available surplus fruit.

Dr. Summerskill

The question of making a special issue of sugar to ration book holders for domestic jam making will be reviewed at an early date, when my right hon. Friend has fuller information about the supplies of imported sugar which will be available to this country in 1946. The Co-operative Fruit Preservation Scheme of the National Federation of Women's Institutes has been discontinued because the amounts produced in recent years have been very small. It will still be possible for Institute preserving centres to obtain sugar for this purpose if required
