HC Deb 20 March 1946 vol 420 cc365-6W
59. Dr. Stephen Taylor

asked the Minister of Food if, in view of the fact that they received a double allocation of dried eggs, he will consider making a double allocation of shell eggs to expectant and nursing mothers and children under five years of age.

Dr. Summerskill

My right hon. Friend appreciates that the temporary withdrawal of dried eggs falls especially heavily on expectant mothers and young children who received extra allowances. More shell eggs are being distributed and expectant mothers get two eggs at each allocation A very large number of eggs would be required to extend this concession to nursing mothers and to all children under five years of age and the quantity of eggs available for other consumers would be reduced so greatly that my right hon Friend cannot see his way to adopt this suggestion.
