§ Mr. Denvilleasked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the 1,000 redundant workers since January at Vickers-Armstrongs, Scotswood Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and the fact that more are likely to be discharged in the near future, he can give an assurance that there are good prospects of these workers finding early employment.
§ Mr. ButlerThe majority of the workers who have become available from this factory since January last have been absorbed in other work. Energetic steps are being taken by my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade and Minister of Production to secure the maximum level of employment in the area and thus absorb as quickly as possible any other workers who may become available from the factory in the near future.
§ Mr. Kirbyasked- the President of the Board of Trade how many workers it is intended to employ in the continued production of aero-engines at the Liverpool factory of Messrs. D. Napier and Sons; for what purposes the redundant capacity of the factory is to be used for civilian production and how many workers will be required for the latter purpose.
§ Mr. LytteltonIt is hoped to employ over 2,000 workers in the continued production of aero engines at this factory. Negotiations for the use of the remaining capacity are being actively pursued but have not yet reached an advanced enough stage for details to be published; the intention is to use it fully.
