HC Deb 16 June 1944 vol 400 c2304W
Sir R. Young

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is aware that fire-watchers are being canvassed to insure against enemy action by a payment of 4½d. a week for an insurance of 25s. a week for 52 weeks; that the canvasser has no printed particulars but asserts, when challenged, that it is a Government scheme; and will he make inquiries with a view to ascertaining the nature of the scheme, the persons responsible and to ensure that no one is victimised by the scheme.

Mr. H. Morrison

I understand that there is a private insurance scheme under which part-time Civil Defence workers can obtain cover from an insurance company against death or injury resulting from enemy action while on duty, in addition to any payments due under the Personal Injuries (Civilians) Scheme. This private scheme is not sponsored by the Government, and if my hon. Friend will let me have further particulars of the case he mentions I will inquire into the allegation regarding the canvassing methods adopted.
