HC Deb 16 June 1944 vol 400 cc2304-5W
Mr. Hewlett

asked the Postmaster-General whether, in view of the delay to letters and parcels sent from this country to His Majesty's Forces in India and Italy due to incorrect addressing, he will state the proper address for His Majesty's Forces in these theatres.

Captain Crookshank

The address of letters and parcels for members of His Majesty's Army and Air Force in India and Italy should include the following particulars in the order shown:

  1. (1) Army or R.A.F. Number (in the case of "other ranks" only).
  2. (2) Rank, Name and Initials.
  3. (3) Battery, Company, Squadron or other section of the Unit.
  4. 2305
  5. (4) Army Unit or Royal Air Force.
  6. (5) India Command or C.M.F., as the case may be.

For His Majesty's Forces in India other forms of address, such as c/o a Bank, are not prohibited. Their use is not, however, recommended as they may lead to delay in delivery, owing to the need for redirection.
