HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 c423W
Mr. Tinker

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that there are over 200 male adults signing on at Leigh-Atherton in Tyldesley Employment Exchange who have been unemployed over six months; and will he have a special inquiry made to find out whether suitable employment can be found for them?

Mr. Bevin

I am having inquiries made and will communicate with my hon. Friend.

Mr. Tinker

asked the Minister of Labour how many male adults are signing on at Employment Exchanges; and how many have been unemployed for over six months?

Mr. Bevin

At 19th July, 1943, the latest date for which statistics have been collected, there were 39,735 men aged 18 and over registered at Employment Exchanges in Great' Britain as wholly unemployed (exclusive of 19,349 men classified by interviewing panels as unsuitable for ordinary industrial employment), 726 registered as temporarily stopped and 971 registered as unemployed casual workers. Particulars are not available as to the numbers of these men who had been unemployed for over six months.
