HC Deb 23 September 1943 vol 392 cc423-4W
Captain P. Macdonald

asked the Minister of Labour how many strikes have taken place in Great Britain since 5th August; what has been the loss in output and man-power hours; and how many of them have had union support?

Mr. Bevin

The number of stoppages of work due to industrial disputes begin- ning during the period from 5th August to 18th September, so far as at present reported to my Department, was 230. I am not in possession of statistics showing the aggregate loss of output resulting from these stoppages, or the number of man-hours lost, but on the basis of the information at present available the aggregate number of man-days lost in the stoppages, at the establishments where the disputes occurred, is estimated to have been about 270,000. As regards the last part of the Question, the answer is none so far as I am aware; indeed I have received every assistance from the trade unions in support of constitutional methods.
