HC Deb 30 March 1943 vol 388 cc56-7W
Mr. Hutchinson

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will give instructions that the work of group secretaries and collectors of street savings groups, in connection with the National War Savings campaign shall be regarded as work of national importance in the case of immobile women in the higher-age groups?

Mr. Bevin

No special instructions are necessary. When such women are interviewed, the fact that they are doing voluntary work of national importance, such as war savings work, is taken into account. They may still be asked, however, to undertake other war work if there is need for their services locally and it is considered that they could reasonably be asked to do more than they are already doing. Women who cannot undertake ordinary industrial work are encouraged to undertake war savings, salvage or other voluntary war work if they are not already doing some such work.
