HC Deb 30 March 1943 vol 388 cc46-7W
Mr. Hutchinson

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he can make a statement as to the qualifications, or exemptions from professional qualifying examinations which can be obtained by cadets selected for engineering cadetships under the scheme recently introduced by his Department in conjunction with the Ministry of Labour and National Service?

Mr. Butler

An engineering cadet will be examined by the authorities of the technical college which he is attending at the end of Part I and again at the end of Part II of his course. The following subjects of the examinations will be assessed by the Institutions of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers:

Part I.—Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, Principles of Electricity.

Part II.—Mathematics, Properties and Strength of Materials, Internal Combustion Engines, Theory of Machines and Hydraulics, Electrical Engineering, Workshop Technology.

A cadet who satisfies prescribed requirements as to attendance, home work, class work, laboratory work and examination results will be awarded a diploma which will be signed on behalf of the Board of Education and of the College which he has attended. This diploma will be accepted by the three institutions as exempting the holder from the associate membership examinations of the Institutions in the subjects assessed by them as shown on the diploma. A cadet who fails to obtain the diploma but has succeeded in passing the examination in any assessed subject may apply to the institutions for his success to be considered for exemption from the associate membership examination in that subject.
