HC Deb 30 March 1943 vol 388 c47W
Dr. Morgan

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what were the causes of the delay in obtaining supplies of mapharside, the drug now used in naval anti-syphilitic treatment, and its distribution in 1942; to what extent the prohibition of the importation of this drug from the United States of America hampered treatment in this country; and whether ample supplies are now available?

Mr. Alexander

There was no delay in obtaining supplies of mapharside nor in its distribution other than an inevitable but brief interval to allow a scheme to be drawn up and supplies of the drug to be distributed to naval establishments. With regard to the second part of the Question, prohibition on the importation of mapharside did not hamper treatment so far as the Navy is concerned as ample supplies always have been and are now available.
