HC Deb 17 December 1943 vol 395 cc1820-1W
Sir R. Gower

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that many R.A.P.C. personnel are anxious to be transferred to more active military duty; and whether, considering that they now do work identical with that done by civilians in the same offices, he will engage more civilian staff and so enable the soldiers to do more active work?

Sir J. Grigg

Considerable numbers of R.A.P.C. personnel have been transferred to combatant arms. My hon. Friend will appreciate that such transfers can only be carried out if suitable civilian substitutes can be found. As many such civilians as possible are being engaged but their number in present circumstances is limited.
