HC Deb 21 October 1942 vol 383 cc1991-2W
Captain Gammans

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the growing shortage of labour and materials, he can state the approximate number of men engaged in the repair of damage to houses and property caused by enemy action; and the number so engaged a year ago?

Mr. E. Brown

I can give figures only for house repairs carried out by local authorities either directly or through contractors. These for the London region were approximately 29,000 at the end of September, 1941, and 14,000 at the end of September, 1942. I am obtaining corresponding figures for the rest of England and Wales and will send them to my hon. and gallant Friend.

notification of measles and whooping-cough was not introduced till late in 1939.
