HC Deb 17 November 1942 vol 385 c228W
Major Lloyd

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning whether he will issue instructions that entrance gates to houses where there are resident children under five years of age shall be left in position, either until the children reach that age, or until the other sources of supply of scrap metal have been exhausted?

Mr. Hicks

No, Sir. The need for scrap metal is very great and I fear that we must continue to leave responsibility for the safety of children in their homes with their parents.

Sir R. Gower

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Works and Planning what is the position of local authorities with regard to the salvage of railings round privately-owned cemeteries?

Mr. Hicks

Local authorities schedule railings which they consider to be unnecessary, and in so doing act under instructions from my Department. Those instructions make no distinction between privately-owned and other burial-grounds.
