HC Deb 16 December 1942 vol 385 cc1964-5W
Colonel Carver

asked the Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the fact that crossed swords against an officer's name in the Army List denote that he has served in previous campaigns to the present one, as well as that he has cither been Mentioned in Despatches or received a decoration since 1939, he will cause an additional distinguishing mark to be added to the names of those officers who have received recognition during the present conflict?

Sir J. Grigg

The names of those Army officers who have been decorated or mentioned in despatches since 1939 have been published from time to time in the London Gazette. The special symbols and letters against certain names in the Quarterly Army List are inserted for official reference, having regard also to security considerations. That purpose is adequately served by the existing practice, and there appears to be no valid reason to alter it.
