HC Deb 05 August 1942 vol 382 cc1047-8W
Captain Gammons

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of War Transport whether he has considered the possibility of eliminating all except the red light on those traffic-lights which it is proposed to retain, in order to save electric power?

Mr. Noel-Baker

I am grateful to my hon. and gallant Friend for his proposal. I am afraid, however, that experiments made some time ago have shown that his plan would involve difficulties and danger both to pedestrians and drivers. In any case, it could not be generally adopted, and its use at some points only would cause uncertainty and would thus lead to accidents.
