HC Deb 21 October 1941 vol 374 c1640W
Colonel Carver

asked the Minister of Agriculture the proportion of two-furrow ploughs used in this country; and whether this particular plough is regarded as the most serviceable in the present emergency?

Mr. Hudson

While exact particulars are not available of the number of two-furrow ploughs used in the country as compared with other types, sales to farmers of two-furrow ploughs very greatly predominate over those of other types, probably in the proportion of three to one. The choice of plough is governed by too many factors—soil, crop, depth of ploughing, weight of plough, weather, contour—to enable any general opinion to be expressed as to what plough is the most serviceable. It is obviously desirable that the fullest possible use should be made of three and more furrow ploughs rather than two-furrow ploughs so far as conditions permit.
