HC Deb 09 April 1941 vol 370 c1580W
Sir J. Mellor

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will investigate the case of Ivor James Sweet, aged 22 years, of 125, Clifford Bridge Road, Coventry, who pleaded guilty on 31st March, before the Coventry magistrates, to striking a furnace, engaged on Government work, with a seldge-hammer on 14th March with intent to impair its efficiency; whether he will state the circumstances in which Sweet was excused military service; and whether he will be conscripted forthwith?

Mr. Bevin

I am informed that Sweet, who was employed in a reserved occupation was convicted and fined for this offence, and that he has since been reinstated in his employment and is working satisfactorily. The question of calling him up for military service does not therefore arise.
