HC Deb 04 July 1940 vol 362 cc1022-3W
Sir W. Davison

asked the Minister of Supply whether he will take steps to put a stop to the large supplies of paper which are at present being exported from this country to Eire where the severe restrictions limiting the use of paper in Great Britain do not obtain, so that books and papers which cannot, owing to the restrictions referred to, be printed in this country are printed in Eire and re-exported to Great Britain, to the detriment of English printers?

Mr. Harold Macmillan

While paper, like most other commodities, may be sent to Eire without individual export licence, most kinds of paper, including printing paper generally, may not be made without a production licence from the Paper Control, which in present conditions would only be given for this purpose in exceptional cases.
