HC Deb 06 August 1940 vol 363 cc58-9W
Mr. Lyons

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that, as a consequence of recent decisions, the "Get you Home" Scheme for men of His Majesty's forces proceeding on leave, organised by the Leicestershire Automobile Club, has had to cease its operations except so far as regards certain limited locations; and whether he will arrange for facilities for this scheme to continue in the interests of serving men unless its cessation is desired because of War Office alternatives?

Mr. Eden

The War Office scheme, in which I am glad to acknowledge the ready co-operation of the Leicestershire Automobile Club, was instituted for the benefit of men on leave from overseas or from service afloat. The scheme was thus limited owing to the need for keeping to a minimum the consumption of petrol and the amount of traffic on the roads at night. It still remains in force, but, in present circumstances, it will be obvious that its scope is considerably reduced.
