HC Deb 11 May 1939 vol 347 c702W
Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether he can state the number of schools in the counties of Carmarthen, Cardigan and Pembroke, at which no milk is provided for the children on account of the failure of the education authority to secure delivery of milk at the schools; and what steps he is taking to secure supplies of milk for those schools?

Mr. Lindsay

On the 1st October, 1938, the latest date for which complete figures are available, no milk was provided in 79 public elementary schools in Cardiganshire, 21 in Carmarthenshire and 20 in Pembrokeshire. The local education authorities are not directly responsible for the administration of the arrangements though they are often able to assist the head teachers in obtaining a supply of milk. The Board are endeavouring, with the assistance of the Milk Marketing Board, to secure a more extensive operation of the Milk in Schools Scheme in these and other rural areas.
