HC Deb 11 May 1939 vol 347 cc702-3W
Dr. Summerskill

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether his attention has been drawn to the first appointment of a woman to a professorship of Cambridge University; and whether he will make representations to the university authorities to admit women as members of the university?

Mr. Lindsay

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, I would remind the hon. Member that the Board have no jurisdiction over the universities, and that it has always been the policy of the Government to safeguard their autonomy. In these circumstances it would not be proper for me to convey representations to the University of Cambridge on this matter.
