HC Deb 09 February 1939 vol 343 c1148W
Mr. Astor

asked the Postmaster-General how many male and female retirements, respectively, are expected to occur in 1939–40 in the Savings Bank Department above the grade of clerical officer; and whether the proportion of male to female will be retained in the filling of these vacancies in order to safeguard the interest of ex-service employeés?

Sir W. Womersley

Twenty men and nine women are expected to retire in 1939 and 27 men and seven women in 1940. Under an agreement with the staff, members of both sexes are now equally eligible for promotion on their merits to fill these vacancies, and it is not practicable therefore to give any undertaking that the present proportions between the sexes will be maintained.
