asked the Minister of Labour and National Service whether he can state the number of persons in receipt of unemployment assistance in the area covered by the Pontefract area office at the present time; and the comparative figures in August last?

pursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 30th November, 1939, Vol. 355, col. 220), supplied the following statement

During the week ended 24th November, 1939, 2,150 payments of unemployment assistance allowances were made at the Employment Exchanges in the district covered by the Pontefract area office of the Unemployment Assistance Board; this figure excludes payments in supplementation of insurance benefit and 48 payments made under the Unemployment Assistance (Prevention and Relief of Distress) Regulations, 1939. The corresponding figure for the week ended 25th August, 1939, was 2,542.
