HC Deb 14 December 1939 vol 355 cc1298-9W
Mr. Benjamin Smith

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if, when abolishing the margarine pool and reverting to the peace-time system of branded margarine, he considered that the pool margarine was to have been uniformly vitaminised, whereas those existing brands which are within reach of the poorest classes have no added vitamins; and will he take steps to ensure that the only brands of margarine sold during the period of butter rationing shall be those which contain an adequate quantum of the vitamins of good summer butter?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

When the production of margarine was decontrolled freedom of action was restored to the manufacturers to manufacture margarine to their own particular formula. Some manufacturers including the largest producers vitaminise all their margarine, both cheap and dear. As regards the last part of the question I would refer to my reply to the hon. Member for Shipley (Mr. Creech Jones) on the 14th November.
