HC Deb 14 December 1938 vol 342 c2008W
Mr. Ridley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies in view of the fact, as stated in the Report of the Director of Education in Kenya that only 12 per cent. of the children of school age in Kenya attend schools of any kind, any steps are under consideration to encourage the development of further native education?

Mr. M. MacDonald

I have been unable to trace the statement mentioned by the hon. Member. But I agree with him that the percentage of children for whom it is possible to provide educational facilities in Kenya, as indeed in most of the Tropical African Dependencies, is regrettably low and the matter is one which is engaging my active attention.
