HC Deb 14 April 1938 vol 334 cc1333-4W
Sir W. Jenkins

asked the Minister of Labour what number of children of school age attended camps in South Wales for 1936, 1937, and up to date this year; what has been the cost for each camp; and the amounts paid by the Commissioner and the amounts paid by the local education authorities?

Mr. E. Brown

The approximate numbers of children of school age attending school camps in South Wales, provided and maintained by grants made by the Commissioner for the Special Areas in England and Wales, during 1936, 1937 and 1938 to date are as follow:

1936 10,000
1937 15,000
1938 to date 1,600*
* Winter session.

The cost of providing and maintaining the camps to date is £111,130, of which £60,574 represents capital expenditure, and £50,556 maintenance. Separate figures for each of the five camps are appended. The whole of this sum has been provided by the Commissioner. The expenditure incurred by Local Education Authorities is confined to purely educational services, e.g., educational equipment, salaries of teachers, etc., and I regret that information as to the actual amount of such expenditure is not available.
