HC Deb 11 November 1937 vol 328 cc1873-4W
Mr. L. Smith

asked the Minister of Labour whether it has been brought to his notice, in connection with the shortage of domestic servants and the disinclination of volunteers for training, that many new houses erected nowadays do not contain proper accommodation for maids, especially when families increase; and what steps he is taking to impress on all concerned the desirability of better provision of such accommodation?

Mr. E. Brown

I am not in a position to say whether the statement contained in the first part of the question is correct. It is obvious, however, that lack of proper accommodation must add considerably to the difficulty of getting or retaining, resident maids, and I have no doubt that this is well known to most mistresses already.
