HC Deb 04 November 1937 vol 328 cc1128-9W
Mr. Jenkins

asked the Minister of Labour whether the Unemployment Assistance Board are making arrangements for the payment of extra assistance at Christmas on lines similar to the extra payment made for many years by the public assistance committees and sanctioned by the Ministry of Health?

Mr. E. Brown

I am informed by the Board that no general increase of allowances on this account is contemplated.

Mr. E. Smith

asked the Chancellor of he Exchequer whether he will consider making arrangements for the unemployed, widows, and old age pensioners to receive a grant in Christmas week?

Sir J. Simon

The Government do not feel able to introduce the legislation which would be necessary to give effect to this suggestion.
