HC Deb 03 November 1937 vol 328 c934W
Mr. Smedley Crooke

asked the Minister of Transport what is causing the delay in commencing the improvements on the trunk road east of Haltwhistle, Northumberland, which, if proceeded with, would find work for a number of unemployed, a considerable proportion of whom are ex-service men whose physical condition through unemployment has been reconditioned by the efforts of the British Legion?

Colonel Brown

asked the Minister of Transport when work is likely to start on the east-to-west trunk road in the neighbourhood of Haltwhistle?

Mr. Burgin

Before work can be started on a trunk road by-pass an Order under Section 1 (3) of the Trunk Roads Act, 1936, is necessary. The period of notice of the Order in this case expired 10 days ago and the representations which I have received must be duly considered before I can properly make the Order.
