Mr. Jaggarasked the Home Secretary whether the police give any kind of receipt to an arrested person for such property as is taken from him or her; and, if not, will he issue regulations that this shall be done in future, so that there may be no dispute as to whether everything has been returned to the owner when the charge has been disposed of?
§ Sir J. SimonThe general practice is that property taken from prisoners at police stations is listed on the charge sheet in their presence and in the presence of the various officers concerned with the case, who have to account for it later. I do not think any further safeguard would be secured if a formal receipt were to be given to the prisoner.
