HC Deb 17 March 1937 vol 321 c2081W
Sir A. Wilson

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that the latest Irish Free State census shows that the net emigration figures, other than overseas, which is practically identical with emigration to the United Kingdom, for the decennium 1926 to 1936, totalled 31,421 males and 46,702 females; and whether he can state the net immigration figure of male and female aliens into the United Kingdom for the same period?

Sir J. Simon

Yes, Sir. I am aware of the figures stated. As regards the last part of the question no precise figures for alien immigration can be given, but the number of aliens registered with the police in 1936 was 185,758 as compared with 260,000 approximately in 1927. In comparing these figures account must be taken of the fact that in 1933 about 45,000 women of British birth were exempted from registration and their names removed from the register.
