HC Deb 06 July 1932 vol 268 cc451-2W
Mr. TURTON

asked the Minister of Transport to what extent the Ministry is responsible for the local census of traffic; the amount of the expenses that are paid by the Ministry of Transport; and what is the annual total cost of the census?

Mr. PYBUS

It has been the practice to ask highway authorities to arrange for a census of traffic on classified roads to be taken at intervals, but in the interests of economy it has been decided not to take the census on Class 2 roads which was due this year. The census taken on Class I roads in 1931 cast approximately £32,000, and the 1929 census on Class II roads cost approximately £23,000. Grants of 50 per cent. were made from the Road Fund towards the expenditure incurred.
