HC Deb 24 February 1931 vol 248 cc1965-6W
Mr. TINKER

asked the Secretary for Mines what is the average weekly amount paid by the mine workers towards the upkeep of pit-head baths; and how many pit-head baths are in use and the average number of workers using them?

Mr. SHINWELL

I regret that I have not sufficient information to enable me to quote an average figure, but the highest amount of weekly contribution by the workmen which has come to my notice is sixpence and the amount is usually between that figure and three-pence. The number of pit-head baths in use, excluding those provided for officials only, is 75. The total accommodation available in these baths is for 76,275 men and 62 women. I have no reason to suppose that any substantial part of this accommodation is not occupied, but I cannot say what the average number of actual users is.
