HC Deb 24 February 1931 vol 248 c1965W
Mr. WEST RUSSELL

asked the Secretary for Mines what orders have now been received for the export of United Kingdom coal to Scandinavia as a direct or indirect result of the recent visit to Scandinavia of the British delegation of which he was a member?

Mr. SHINWELL

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to the hon. and gallant Member for Wycombe (Sir A. Knox) on 16th December last.

Sir N. GRATTAN-DOYLE

asked the Secretary for Mines whether, as a result of his recent meeting with coalowners and exporters, preparatory to a meeting with the railway companies, any orders for the export of British coal to Scandinavia have been secured?

Mr. SHINWELL

The meetings referred to arose out of one of the delegation's recommendations which dealt with coal loading equipment and anti-breakage appliances. As a result of the meetings the coalowners, coal exporters, railway companies and dock authorities are setting up for each coal exporting district joint committees of experts to determine what type of anti-breakage appliance would most effectively meet the requirements of the ports in the various districts, and to consider what steps could be taken for the installation of such equipment at the earliest possible date.
