asked the Secretary for Mines the number of persons employed in the mining industry of Great Britain at the end of 1920 and at the end of 1930, giving separate figures for Lancashire and Cheshire?

Mr. SHINWELL

The number of persons, including clerks and salaried persons, employed in the coal mining industry in Great Britain during 1920 was 1,226,900 and at the end of 1930, 903,100. The corresponding figures for Lancashire and Cheshire were 116,600 and 75,200, respectively.
