HC Deb 06 May 1930 vol 238 c765W
Mr. SIMON

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will give the necessary figures as regards the cost of a typical wheat mixture, of wheat-feed, of flour, and of bread, during 1913 and at a convenient recent date, in such form as to show how far the margins of the millers and the bakers, respectively, for manufacturing and for profit have increased; and how the increases compare with the increases of costs?

Mr. W. GRAHAM

I am unable to give the information asked for with regard to typical wheat mixtures in 1913 and at the present time. Wheat mixtures used in the manufacture of bread-making flours vary according to the wheats available and the special circumstances of individual milling businesses. Information in regard to the prices of wheat, flour and bread in March, 1914, 1918 and 1930, was given in reply to a question asked by my hon. Friend the Member for East Leicester on 17th March last. I have no recent information as to the increase in milling and baking costs since 1913. Information of this character should be obtain able under the powers which it is proposed to give to the Consumers' Council.
