§ Sir W. WAYLANDasked the Minister of Labour how many permits have been granted to subjects of the United States to work as engineers on the erection and maintenance of American talking machines in this country?
§ Miss BONDFIELDThe number of American subjects at present employed in this country, by permission granted under the Aliens Order, in connection with the erection and maintenance of talking machines is 51. I could not, without detailed inquiry, say how many are engineers, but they are all employed in responsible executive or technical posts and in most cases have British subjects in training under their supervision. I may add that according to my information, the two American companies concerned employ in this country 310 British engineers in all, and approximately 500 British subjects in other capacities.
