Dr. MORGANasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies how many schemes, and their estimated cost, have been submitted to the Colonial Office from the Crown Colonies in the West Indies; how many of such schemes have been sanctioned by the Committee under the Colonial Development Act; how many have been Government schemes fostered and sponsored by the local governments after approval by the local legislative councils; and if any schemes submitted by private individuals, local traders, or public utility societies have been sanctioned?
§ Mr. LUNNCompleted applications for assistance from the Colonial Development Fund have so far been received from four West Indian Governments. Many of the schemes are related to one another and accordingly the number of separate schemes is to some extent a matter of opinion. The number of substantially distinct schemes would appear to be about 33, involving a total estimated expenditure of £1,500,000 in round figures. Three of these schemes have already been considered by the Colonial Development Advisory Committee, and two have been recommended. Most of the remaining schemes will reach the Committee at an early date, but a few must be detained for further inquiries. All the schemes have been submitted by the Governors of the respective Colonies after such consultation as they considered necessary. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.
