HC Deb 05 November 1929 vol 231 cc849-50W
Sir G. RENTOUL

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will state the number of foreign fishing vessels entering British ports during the years 1927 and 1928?

Mr. GRAHAM

The number and tonnage of the foreign fishing vessels that entered at ports in the United Kingdom from the Deep Sea Fisheries, including their repeated voyages, were as follow, in the years 1927 and 1928:

1927. Vessels. Tons net.
Entered with cargo 4,997 224,445
Entered in ballast 514 41,528
1928.
Entered with cargo 4,763 233,144
Entered in ballast 520 41,623

Vessels are recorded as "with cargo" when they have cargo for discharge in the United Kingdom. Vessels calling at more than one port in the United Kingdom in the course of the same inward voyage are counted once only, for the purposes of the above table, in respect of that voyage.

Sir R. HUTCHISON

asked the Prime Minister when and where the commission to inquire into the fishing industry will meet; what are its terms of reference; and whether those who wish to give evidence will be invited to do so?

The PRIME MINISTER

As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the hon. and gallant Member to the reply which I gave to similar questions yesterday. As regards the first and last parts of his question, the Sub-Committee will sit at 2, Whitehall Gardens, S.W.I, and any persons who desire to give evidence should communicate direct with the Sub-Committee at that address.
