§ Mr. HAYDAYasked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that in filling the position of manager of the branch Employment Exchange, Portland, a person already in receipt of a salary as an Income Tax collector was appointed; that the reason given for this appointment was that the successful candidate was best qualified, although another candidate had had four years' experience as an Exchange officer; and whether, in view of the desirability of giving preference in these appointments to candidates with no other occupation, he will have this matter reconsidered?
§ Sir A. STEEL-MAITLANDThis appointment was made after careful consideration of the qualifications of all the candidates, and I am not prepared to reconsider it. Due weight was given to 901W the claims of persons with no other occupation, but none was considered to possess the necessary qualifications.
