HC Deb 14 November 1928 vol 222 c901W
Lieut.-Colonel ACLAND -TROYTE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why, in his circular to local authorities on the subject of works for the relief of unemployment, no provision is made to ensure that preference is given to ex-service men; and whether he will take steps to remedy this omission?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I have been asked to reply. The detailed conditions for the new grants will be published shortly and will include the usual provision that not less than 75 per cent. of the local men taken on for the work must be ex-service men. As regards men transferred from depressed areas, a similar preference will be given so far as ex-service men are suitable and available.
