HC Deb 19 December 1928 vol 223 cc3025-6W
Sir F. HALL

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies when the building of Takoradi harbour was commenced; what was the contract time for the work; when it is expected that the additional works necessary to make good the defects in the arrangements at the harbour will be finished; upon whom the cost thereof will fall: and what is the estimated loss in revenue owing to the delay that has taken place?

Mr. AMERY

Work was commenced in August, 1921, the original date for completion being 31st December, 1924. The present contractors took over the work on 15th September, 1924, and their original contract date for completion was 31st December, 1927. Additional works were, however, authorised during the progress of the contract, and the contract date was extended to 31st December, 1930. The remedial work to make good defects is expected to be completed at an early date. The cost of the remedial work falls on the contractors. The defects have caused a delay of three months in opening the harbour, but it has still been opened more than two years before the contract date.
