HC Deb 19 December 1928 vol 223 c3026W
Mr. SHEPHERD

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the attempt to escape made by two boys from the Hightown industrial school, and the wounding by one of the boys of the attendant who was taking them back to the school; how many times these particular boys have absconded; and what is the total number of absconsions from this school during the past school year?

Sir V. HENDERSON

I have called for a report regarding the incident, and I find that the boy who injured an officer of the school was charged before the magistrate and has since been certified, presumably either under the Lunacy Act or the Mental Deficiency Act. The other boy had previously absconded once. The number of abscondings notified to the Home Office by the Hightown School during the present year is six, including these two boys.
