HC Deb 10 November 1927 vol 210 c377W
Lord APSLEY

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the sale of Russian matches in State-licensed premises; and, if so, what action he proposes to take?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

My attention has been drawn to several incorrect statements in the Press. The matches in question are not on sale by the State. I find that one packet of them was on one occasion bought by the porter at a local shop for a barmaid at one house in the Carlisle State Management District to replenish her stock and boxes from this packet were sold in that house. So far as I have been able to ascertain, these matches have not been sold in any other of the State-owned premises.
