HC Deb 10 November 1927 vol 210 cc377-8W
Sir W. DAVISON

asked the Home Secretary how many alien women have received permits to come into this country during the past two years for employment as domestic servants?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I have been asked to reply. In the years ending 31st December, 1925 and 1926, the numbers of permits issued under Article 1 (3)(b) of the Aliens Order, 1920, to female domestic servants were 1,481 and 1,843 respectively. In addition, during the same years 311 and 295 women, admitted as visitors or students, were permitted by the Home Office to take up domestic service after consultation with my Depart- ment. Perhaps I should add that a permit issued by my Department does not impose any obligation on the immigration officer at the port of arrival in the United Kingdom to give permission to land to the alien in respect of whom the permit is issued, nor does it exempt the alien from any of the requirements and restrictions of the Aliens Order, 1920.
