§ Commander BELLAIRSasked the Prime Minister whether he has considered the petitions submitted to him by the representatives of many professions, praying for an inquiry into the question of English spelling; whether he is willing to advise in favour of such an inquiry or to consider the matter by receiving a deputation of the promoters 2326W of the petitions, so that the case may be fully put before the Government?
§ The PRIME MINISTERI have carefully considered the representations made to me on this subject, but I do not think that in the circumstances the appointment of a Royal Commission or other Committee of Inquiry is called for. My hon. and gallant Friend will be aware that a deputation on this subject was received in 1924 by the right hon. Gentleman the Member for Central Newcastle (Mr. Trevelyan). Full information is in the possession of my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Education, and in these circumstances I do not think that any further deputation is required.
