HC Deb 27 February 1924 vol 170 cc511-2W
Mr. HERBERT MORRISON

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will state the main points in respect of which the regulations of the unemployment grants committee are being modified; and whether any objection will now be made to any local authority paying not less than trade union rates of wages on direct labour schemes?

Mr. SHAW

The main modification of the conditions of the unemployment grants committee is in respect of wages to be paid on schemes carried out by local authorities by direct labour. In future on such schemes local authorities will be free to pay wages not exceeding the local authority's rate to its own workmen on similar classes of work or the recognised district rate, where such exists, if that is lower. A circular conveying this modification is going out to-day.
